Notre Dame Academy Newsletter august 2018
Once an EAGLE, always an EAGLE . . .

Dear ,

Since 1904, Notre Dame Academy has an unmatched tradition of preparing young women from northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan for college by providing the necessary tools to lead successful, responsible, and Christian lives.

It gives us great pleasure to serve the Notre Dame Academy alumnae in several ways. From welcoming you back to NDA with a variety of special events such as Fall Musical Preview reception, Memorial Mass, Mr. NDA Young Alumnae Event, and the Reunion to providing alumnae updates in the Women of Vision magazine, the Plaid Pages monthly E-newsletter, and more.

The NDA Alumnae Facebook page is a great way to keep in touch with your friends, as well as get the inside scoop on the school. We want to meet and learn more about what our alumnae are doing. We schedule a number of NDA Gatherings throughout the year in various regions of the country. If you would like us to visit your city, please let us know.

Notre Dame Academy Alumnae truly define our alma mater and serve as its strongest legacy. Each alumna is important to us as you hold a vital part of the NDA story within your experience here. The Alumnae Relations Office supports the mission of Notre Dame Academy by providing spiritual, intellectual, networking, service, and social opportunities for alumnae to renew and grow lifelong bonds. All graduates are welcome and encouraged to return to to NDA for a visit, a tour of the building, or just to cheer for the Eagles. Call the Alumnae Relations Office to schedule a time.

And remember if you have a daughter who wants to become an Eagle and continue your legacy at Notre Dame Academy, she  is eligible for the Alumnae Legacy Discount – a $500 renewable discount that is awarded to daughters of NDA Alumnae.

NDA Alumna Book Release and Signing

Patty (Prior) Slupecki ‘83, is pleased to announce the release and signing of her new book, Suddenly Widowed. This memoir of survival is her story of grief and survival after the tragic death of her husband, Mark Slupecki, while riding his bicycle. She is an author, coach, speaker and grief survivor. Widowed at the age of 37, she was left to raise her children alone. She struggled through overwhelming grief and depression. Unwilling to give up on life and remaining positive, she embarked on a journey of survival, self-development, and recovery. Patty uses her experience to help other widows navigate the unknown following the death of a spouse or life partner. It is her passion to offer hope and guidance along the road to a new normal. She is a third generation alumnae, and her daughter Ellie Slupecki ‘10 is a fourth generation NDA graduate.

On September 8, 2018, Patty is hosting a public book launch event  from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. at The Farmhouse at Wildwood Preserve, 4830 Central Ave., Toledo, Ohio. The event is open to the public and will include an author reading and book signing, live music, refreshments and SWAG. Read more here.

Nashville's Newest Rollergirl

Congratulations to Sarah (Thompson) Douthat ‘98 on becoming a Nashville Rollergirl (NRG). Sarah’s friend took her to her first bout (game) last July. As she was volunteering at the merchandise booth, she was watching the game and thought “Wow! I could totally see myself doing this.”  She began practicing with the NRG last October. It was Derby 101, and she was able to execute the skills they asked participants to do. She skated 21 laps in 5 minutes, which is huge as the rollergirls must do a total of 27 laps.

She has been training with them ever since and was required to pass a series of three skills tests which she completed this month. This officially makes her  a “Crawl Star.” With more training and league practices in order to become scrimmage ready, she will eventually become a “Brawl Star.” Her competition name is Sarahdactyl and her jersey number is 880.

Gerken '18 Wins  Life is Good T-Shirt Art Contest!

NDA is proud to announce that 2018 graduate Anna Gerken is a current winner for the Life is Good T-shirt Art Contest. Anna's design was inspired by her trip to Italy which she took with NDA between her junior and senior year last summer. The profit of sales of her design will go towards the Life is Good Kids Foundation which helps children in need.

According to the Life is Good website, what they focus on grows. They asked kids to help the world grow by drawing what makes life good for them - and helping creat a special collection of Life is Good tees. The results were beautiful, hilarious and inspiring. More than 8,000 entries led them to see the stellar words of wonder. To view the entries click here

As the first couple weeks of school wind down our Advancement Department is gearing up to start planning Mad for Plaid 2019. Mad for Plaid is Notre Dame Academy's ONLY Tuition Scholarship Fundraiser and this year we are excited to celebrate our 10th Anniversary. Last year we welcomed 330 guests and raised over $235,000 (net) for scholarship assistance. We are currently looking for volunteers to help with various committees, and we encourage your participation. It's a great way to get involved with our signature event of the year as well as meet NDA parents, Alumnae and friends. Click here to volunteer. Thank you in advance for your support of Notre Dame Academy, tradition never graduates!

Your gift to the Notre Dame Academy Fund, regardless of size, is integral in continuing the mission of NDA. With these gifts, everyone who loves NDA can contribute in a real way to strengthening our school's future and for students to experience the values of the Sisters of Notre Dame.

Gifts to the Notre Dame Academy Fund are unrestricted gifts that support every aspect of a NDA education. Unrestricted gifts not only provide critical financial aid to deserving students, but also ensure that Notre Dame students continue to have access to the best programs, learning environment and faculty. The Notre Dame Academy Fund is the primary way in which parents, alumnae, and friends make a philanthropic gift to NDA every year.
